Trekking to Mountainous Tajikistan. 8days/7nights

Trekking the Fann Mountains

Number of people: 2-25pax

Number of days: 8 (7 nights)

Day 1 – Dushanbe – Alaudin Lake

You will be picked up by our driver early in the morning for the drive to the trailhead of the trek. Just outside Dushanbe you start going up the northern mountain ranges. You will either go through the Anzob Tunnel (a very exciting tunnel) or over the Anzob Pass, depending on the conditions of either. At the end of the bumpy road your local guide will be expecting you. It’s 45 minutes to hike up to Alaudin Lake, one of the most stunning mountain lakes in Tajikistan.

Driving: 5-6 hours

Altitude: 2780m

Accommodation: tent

Day 2 – Alaudin Lake – Kulikalon Lakes

Today we’re climbing our first mountain pass, the 3630m Laudan Pass. The scale of the mountains around you becomes clear as you get higher. The 5050m high Chapdara Peak dominates the skyline. On top of the Laudan Pass you will see the destination for the day, the Kulikalon Lakes. Here you will pitch your tent close to the water with views off the 1500m vertical wall of Maria Peak.

Trekking: 6 hours

Altitude: 2850m

Accommodation: tent

Day 3 – Kulikalon Lakes – Chukurak Lake

It’s a relatively short day to the breathtaking Chukurak Lake which involves scaling the 3180m Chukurak Pass.

Trekking: 4 hours

Altitude: 2430m

Accommodation: tent

Day 4 – Chukurak Lake – Zimtud

The trek over the Igrok Pass (2500m) is an easy one. There are some settlements along the way and you’re likely to be invited in for tea and a bowl of yoghurt. On the other side of the pass you will stay in a lovely homestay in the village of Zimtud where you’ll be treated to great Tajik food and staying in a traditional Tajik mountain home.

Trekking: 8 hours

Altitude: 1550m

Accommodation: homestay

Day 5 – Zimtud – Archmaiden Valley

After crossing the river a dirt track follows the Archmaiden up, passing some impressive deep gorges. We camp at the confluence of the Archmaiden and Sarymat rivers.

Trekking: 4-5 hours

Altitude: 1870m

Accommodation: tent

Day 6 – Archmaiden Valley – Foot of the Dukdon Pass

Today we will head for the source of the Archmaiden river. After a couple of hours of walking the valley widens. The route passes summer settlements and pastures covered with alpine flowers. In the distance you can see the Dukdon Range with altitudes well over 5000 metres. Our camp will be set up at the last patch of grass, with views over tomorrow’s objective: the 3780m high snowbound Dukdon Pass.

Trekking: 6 hours

Altitude: 3010m

Day 7 – Foot of Dukdon Pass – Sarytag

You will have an early start to make the most of the hard snow in the morning. The Dukdon Pass is the highest pass of the trek and has a proper alpine feel because of the snow. No mountain equipment needed though! A steep descent on the other side leads to the banks of the wild Karakul river and back to civilisation. You will stay in a local home stay in the village Sarytag.

Trekking: 6 hours

Altitude: 2390m

Day 8 – Sarytag – Dushanbe

From Sarytag it’s a couple of hours to Sarvoda, the transport hub for northbound travel. Here you will catch your shared taxi to Khujand and if possible onwards to the border of Uzbekistan.
