The Island Peak, which stands tall at an elevation of 6,189m, is the most popular climbing peak in Nepal amongst 326 peaks currently permitted for climbing and mountaineering. Also known as the Imja Tse in the local Sherpa language, the peak is situated between the picturesque Khumbu region and Imsa Tse Valley. The mountain was named Island Peak by celebrated British mountaineer, Sir Eric Shipton as it looks like an island from afar amidst the icy alpine water.
Located in the Sagarmatha National Park, Island Peak is an extension of a peak coming down from the southern face of Mt. Lhotse Sar. Its first successful expedition was carried out in 1956 by a Swiss expedition group as a practice climb before ascending Mt. Everest. Since then it has been a favorite as a go-to peak amongst mountaineers and climbers alike. The peak is described as a perfect climbing peak if you are looking for a perfect strike of balance between fun, adventure, and adrenaline rush.
From the top of Island Peak, we can have the most amazing views of the mountain ranges of the Khumbu region. Some of the most notable peaks seen in close proximity from the top of Island Peak are Mt. Everest (8,848m), Mt. Lhotse (8,516m), Mt. Makalu (8,463m) and Mt. Ama Dablam. The views of the Imja Glacier, the largest in the region, are pretty amazing from here.
The other main attractions of the peak climbing experience are trekking to three of the most iconic view points of Everest region – Everest Base Camp (5,360m) , Kala Paththar (5,555m) and Gokyo Ri (5357m) . From these view points, several 8000m peaks like the Everest, Cho Oyu, Makalu, and Lhotse will appear at mere distance.
